The Long Beach Jail is located inside the Long Beach Police Department in Downtown next to the 710 freeway. The Long Beach Police typically takes upwards of 12 hours to book an inmate into their custody at which point the arrestee will be eligible for release on bond or on a citation depending on the charges they were arrested on. Every person booked into the custody of the jail must go through the same booking process which includes gathering personal information, pictures, and a quick health exam. To verify the information given to the jailer, every inmate’s finger prints are gathered electronically via a live scan machine. Live scan is digital finger printing utilized for criminal back ground checks. The digital prints are sent to the county, state and Department of Justice for verification of identity and to verify that the individual has no active holds or warrants. The jail is one of largest city jails in California and has the ability to house over 200 inmates. The women’s facility can hold up to 70 inmates and the men’s facility can house up to 132 inmates. The jail is a “Type I” facility which can house non-sentenced inmates for up to 96 hours not including holidays. The facility does house a small number of sentenced inmates who volunteer as inmate workers or trustee. Over 18,000 individuals are booked into custody annually.
